White Pelicans at the Salton Sea, California

The best thing about RVing is the changing scenery. Every time we move, I get a brand new back yard to look at, a new sunrise to enjoy, and a new place to relax for happy hour.

Lately we’ve been hanging out at one of my favourite boondocking spots in California: the Salton Sea. This is the third year we’ve stopped here and this time we’ve explored more locations along the sea and spent more time observing the birds, particularly the white pelicans.

I’ve noticed that they seem to like to stand on sandbars when there is water on both sides. They are kind of awkward on land, so I’m guessing they might feel safer with an escape on either side.

Or maybe, like me, they like the reflections!

The gulls like to hang out with the pelicans too. I often see hundreds of gulls surrounding the pelicans on the shore.

But the gulls are much more skittish than the pelicans so when I am approaching there is always a point when all the gulls suddenly take off creating quite a kerfuffle! The gulls will fill the sky while the pelicans remain standing on shore – probably wondering what all the fuss is about.

At the Salton Sea, there are great opportunities to create interesting foregrounds with the sandbars, ponds, barnacles and dead fish. And when evening comes the day’s last rays light up the mountains in the background.

Ah, my back yard is quite beautiful today.

Interested in how the Salton Sea was formed and the thing about the dead fish? Check out my previous post: California’s Salton Sea.

  2. Love these photos, especially the one with the birds’ reflections! Just beautiful – thanks for posting them!

  3. Great photos. I have managed to get two clear photos of birds in flight but the rest of the time, they are pretty bad even when the bird is standing still. I find them to be such elegant creatures and often misunderstood by humans
