Ok, this is the last of the photos from the Salton Sea, at least for now.
We were only there for two days and I got so many photos! But it’s time to move on before I get too far behind in my photo processing, so I’m going to save the rest of them to show you another time.
Today’s Photo: Salton Sea Seagulls
The sheer number of birds of the Salton Sea is incredible. It’s partly to do with all those dead fish you saw in my post earlier this week.
By the way, I had a lot of people comment on the blog and on social media about how terrible the dead fish are. It’s actually a completely natural occurance in an otherwise unnatural sea. The summer heat causes low oxygen levels in the sea and the fish suffocate. It happens every summer.
Anyway, back to the birds … the sea is loaded with the fish, tilapia, that provide sustenance for the birds on their journey south. One million of the six millions birds that travel the pacific flyway every winter stop at the Salton Sea, and sometimes it seems like they are all in the air at one time!
At any time you can see all sorts of gulls, pelicans, egrets, avocets, sandpipers and other birds filling the sky and the shoreline.

I enjoy looking your Salton Sea photos. I’ve been visiting it since I was a child. I’ve always admired its beauty. I’ve also heard people complain about the dead fish and the odor. But even the Pacific Ocean smells unbearable at times from the dead fish, herring roe, or whatever else. I appreciate that you pointed out that it is just a normal occurrence.

Great photo. Perhaps you could start letting us know whether you used your Canon or the Sony. I’m curious if the Sony can pan and capture motion.
Hi Bill, thank you very much! I made this one with my Canon 7D because I knew I would be photographing the birds and I have a longer lens to use with that camera.
