Vancouver Cityscapes

Being the third largest city in Canada, Vancouver, British Columbia has some great photo ops for cityscapes.

I don’t visit cities very often, so I really enjoyed making a number of cityscape images within walking distance of my sister’s place.

In a previous post, I shared an image I made on False Creek on a cloudy afternoon.

After that we went up to the Burrard Street Bridge to check out the view from there.

There are some impressive mountains behind those skyscrapers but you couldn’t see them at all for the cloud cover that day.

From the middle of the bridge, I made this image looking out towards English Bay.

What I was really looking forward to was the opportunity to do some night photography, but based on the cloud cover earlier in the day I wasn’t sure if it was going to work out.

But by early evening the clouds started to break up so off we went for the night shoot.

The first image was early in the evening when I was still scouting my location. I couldn’t resist the pink clouds!

Finally, when night arrived I made some images from under the Cambie Street Bridge.

I was surprised there was only one other photographer there, it’s a great location!

I’ve discovered that Vancouver has a lot more to offer than traffic jams and it’s especially enjoyable when you don’t have to drive at all.

I have to thank Colleen and Bassim for being such wonderful hosts and for taking me on the night photo shoot. I’m not sure I would have gone down there by myself!

Please share!

  2. My son went to the Vancouver Film School for 3d modeling and is currently living there. We have only been there a few times, but there is SO much to see. It it worth going back for a week or more. Suspension bridges, light house, the city lights, water, boats, hiking trails, mountains, gardens, beautiful sunsets over English Bay.

  3. I have passed through Vancouver a few times on my way to Whistler, but never spent even a few hours there. Your beautiful photos have ensured that I will make amends next time and explore the city – camera in hand.

    1. Hi Arvind, yes you should visit Vancouver on foot with your camera ready at hand. I’ve spent a few days there last year, and came back with some amazing shots. I’m only suprised Anne did not take or publish many more, there are so many opportunities, espcecially in the evening.

Anne’s recommendation to visit Vancouver island and Victoria as well is also a very good one. That was one of the most beautiful vacation I had in my life.

  4. Anne,

Your imagery keeps getting better! So exciting to watch you progress as an emerging pro photographer. Keep up the good work and let me know when you decide to head up this way!

Great pictures, Anne. They sure weren’t taken this month; you couldn’t have found a single cloud anywhere during the whole month of July, except maybe in North Vancouver, but hey! those folks are used to it, aren’t they? : )

    1. Hi Marc, you are right! These photos were taken during the first week of June. June is always cloudy. But July has been absolutely amazing for weather. Thanks for the comments!

  6. First of all, I loved your book ! right to the point on who, what, when, where, why, and how ! very easy to understand, and extremely helpful. Thank you !

would you please tell me (us, your readers) your lenses you use. I love the ridge in Vancouver …. what were your settings ??

    Thank you !

    1. Hi Michelle, I have been meaning to write a blog post with all my equipment because I get asked that all the time. I use a Canon 7D, 70-300mm, 24-105L, and Sigma 10-20. On the night photo under the bridge I used the 10-20 at 10mm f/8 3.2 seconds. Thank you very much for the compliment, much appreciated!

      1. Hi Anne,
Fantastic! I mean cloud cast sky, especially that with pink clouds. The tiniest detail in the photos is as sharp as a razor where it has to be sharp/
        Regards,
        Vasiliy
