I have something a little different for you today! I made this image at Cathedral Grove, a protected stand of giant douglas fir trees, on Vancouver Island, British Columbia.

The grove is not quite as spectacular as I remember it being as a kid because there was a huge storm about 15 years ago that took down many of the ancient trees. Afterwards additional trees had to be removed for safety.
I found one spot where there were 3 of the old giants close together and made an image. In post-processing I added the blur effect and then masked it so one of the trees does not have the blur. Then I made additional adjustments to the colour in Nik Colour Efex Pro.

I love your work, it really stands head and shoulders above others for me. My son just bought me a Nikon D7000 for my birthday as I have always wanted to take lovely photographs, now I need to learn how to use it. I shall look at your images for inspiration x
Love this shot Anne, very inspiring !!! Thanks for sharing your technique, will have to give it a shot 😉
Hi Diana, thank you so much for the compliment. I have only tried this a couple of times and find it is a bit easier when the object you want to isolate (the unblurred part) has clearly defined edges. It is hard to isolate a tree with little leaves. Good luck and let me know if you try it, I would love to see the result.
Cool shot Anne – really liked the processing you decided to use here and I’m not usually very pleased with PP blur – but this came out good.
Hi John, I know what you mean about the PP blur. I find it always does something weird to the edges of the frame. For that reason, I cropped out the edges after the processing to get rid of that bit. Thank you very much for your comments!
Very good, Anne, I like that!
Thanks Fred, I’m glad you enjoyed it.
Really well done. I like your vision here!
Thank you so much Ken, I appreciate it.
Very cool shot. I like the composition, not overly abstract. Well done!
Thank you very much Kris!
Love this abstract Anne! The light and motion is stunning.
Thank you very much Russ! It’s a new kind of technique for me so I’m glad you enjoyed it.
