The first stop in our new life as nomads is Sidney, BC, a whopping 20 minute drive from Victoria. I love Sidney, such a cute little town and home of most of my boating adventures. We decided to go there while the house sold and we finished all of the tasks we had to do before leaving town.
Most of the week was taken up with meetings with bankers, lawyers and realtors but I made sure I took an afternoon to visit the Shaw Ocean Discovery Centre to try out some aquarium photography. The Shaw Ocean Discover Centre is a marine education centre that contains only marine life from the Salish Sea. You wont find any creatures here that don’t naturally live right outside the aquarium.
I think I could watch the jellies all day: their smooth and complicated zen-like movements as they travel around the tank and each other. I tried to find a clear area on the glass with no fingerprints from little hands or algae on the inside.
However, the biggest problem was oil streaks on the glass left over from cleaning fluid which I didn’t see on the LCD screen until I got home. It was very noticeable in the photos of the sea nettles with the bright blue background. I was able to fix it with noise reduction in photoshop on a couple of the less affected images. The better images turned out to the be the moon jellies, which I photographed almost as an afterthought on my second tour through the aquarium.

Got a question though – did you buy any chance sell a couple of your images to Microsoft? Im sure I have seen a couple of your images before as a background/screen saver in windows. – just wondering… 🙂

No, I wish!! Are you referring to the Sea Nettle? I have seen photos similar to it before. It is by no means a unique image. A friend of mine also mentioned to me the Microsoft screen saver photo of the Experience Music Project and wondered if it was mine. It is extremely similar, but a different crop, it is not my image.
