Top 10 Landscape Photos of 2017

Happy New Year! As I sit in the sunny but windy desert on this second day of the new year, it’s time to reflect on the year gone by.

It’s an important exercise for me to make sure I remember the good things that have happened, the fun adventures I had, and all the new beauty I found. As always, I have no problem remembering all the bad things, so much so that it threatens to take over my memory of the good things. Left to my own devices, I remember the grief over the loss of my mother, the months of migraines, all the back pain and the problems with my stupid knees.

But I can’t let those things overwhelm the good times, of which there were many. I am fortunate to be able to live a life with so much freedom and adventure.

When I make my top 10 lists at this time every year, all of the photographs I finished processing during that year are candidates. It’s the only way I can do it because I’m always behind on my processing. And I actually don’t mind it being that way. My images need time to rest before they are finished!

So this year you’ll find images that I actually made in 2016, but didn’t finish processing until 2017 as well as some newer images. There’s even one in here I only made a couple of weeks ago.

These are my personal favourites from my landscape photography. I didn’t try to select a variety of places, or those that got attention on social media. These are simply the ones I like the most.

Coming up next I’ll have my top 10 wildlife photos. For now … the landscapes.

1. Huangshan – The Yellow Mountains of China

Huangshan Mountains China

Late in 2016, I had one of the most memorable trips of my life. I went to China. I have always wanted to visit the Yellow Mountains of China and when something has been on your bucket list for a long time, it’s always an especially profound moment when you finally see it with your own eyes.

2. Huangshan China Sepia Collection

When I went to China, I had a vision in my mind of a type of photograph I wanted to make. After I completed processing my images from China, I went back to create a special collection based on this vision.

3. Cormorant Fishermen in Guilin, China

Cormorant Fishermen on the Li River, Guilin, China

Coming from a fishing family myself, I was eager to discover and photograph the ancient art of cormorant fishing on the Li River. I made this image just as the fishermen lit their lanterns.

4. Another Cormorant Fisherman in Guilin, China

Since I picked my favourites for this list, I had to include another image made shortly after the one above.

5. Angel Peak, New Mexico

A new discovery for us last year, this remarkable spot in New Mexico treated us to the most gorgeous sunset.

6. Mobius Arch, California

Last year Ray and I returned to one of our all time favourite camping, exploring and photography destinations in Alabama Hills, California.

7. Campbell River, British Columbia

This is our view from our campsite in Campbell River, British Columbia, where we spend our summers. We’re so lucky to get such a gorgeous spot right on the estuary.

8. Kilchurn Castle, Scotland

Kilchurn Castle and Loch Awe, Scotland

This is one of the few images from my trip to Scotland that I have processed so far. You’ll be seeing more of these soon!

9. Old Man of Storr, Scotland

The Old Man of Storr, Isle of Skye, Scotland

I almost cancelled my trip because I didn’t think my stupid knees would allow me to go up here. Well I made it! I almost didn’t make it back down though 🙂 The whole story will be coming up on the blog soon, but you can see how this image was processed here.

10. Salton Sea, California

Salton Sea, California

This is the image I just made a couple of weeks ago. I love the minimalist feel.

I hope you enjoyed seeing my favourite landscape photos from last year, and if you too have a top 10 photos list, please feel free to leave a link in the comments. I’d love to see them!

As I mentioned, I also love wildlife photography, so please check out my top 10 wildlife photos of 2017.
