Just a Jackal

When going on an African safari, it’s always the big animals that get all the attention. The big 5. But I was quite amused by the playful jackals that seemed to appear every time the vehicle was moving slowly.

I think they were just as curious as I was. I photographed this one in Tarangire National Park, Tanzania. Since they can be quick on their feet, I set my ISO up very high to allow me a super fast shutter speed. Although when I made this image he actually stood still for a moment – just watching – as was I. I had my aperture wide open at f/2.8 to blur the background.

  1. Love the photo, but not the title. It should be “An Incredible Jackal” – Just a jackal downplays the beauty of the animal and how great they are.

  2. He is super cute. That’s one of the animals I never got to see but I did get a skull which was very tiny. Your African trip must’ve been the highlight of your life. I’m so enjoying every photo that you post from Africa.
