Humpback Whales Breaching

It was one of those days out on the water when not much was happening. It was quiet. Not very many boats, not a lot of birds or anything. The sky was boring and white. It was a little windy and cold. And then … off in the distance … a long way away … a huge splash!

Like a really huge splash!

I immediately thought “that splash was too big for an Orca”, but you never know, there are some big Orcas. Either way, there was something exciting going on.

Snoopy and I went to investigate and it happened again! And again! And again! I was keeping my fingers crossed that it would still be happening by the time I got there.

Five minutes later I was on the scene and a humpback whale was breaching! BREACHING!

There were two and one would breach right after the other giving me a few opportunities to get it right in camera, which was good because the task was made much more difficult by the fact that I was driving the boat at the same time. It seemed like every time I needed to reposition the boat a whale would breach.

In all my years on the water in British Columbia, I’ve never seen one breach before. In fact, I only saw a humpback for the first time around 2 years ago. Last year there were a few humpbacks. And this year they are all over the place. I see one almost every time I go out in the boat now.

And not only that but I saw, and captured, two humpbacks breaching side-by-side!!!

Amazing.

What started out as a fairly boring day on the water turned into one of the most memorable days, polished off by another first.

I saw a humpback blow a rainbow 🙂

That’s got to be a once in a lifetime thing!
