Lion Cubs in Ngorongoro Crater, Tanzania

On a warm sunny African afternoon in Ngorongoro Crater, most of the animals have had their morning feed and are ready for a nice rest in the shade.

Being the kings and queens of all the animals, the lions certainly have no problem lying flat out in the open for a big sleep without a concern in the world.

But that doesn’t stop the inquisitive lion cubs from checking out the safari vehicle as we slowly approach them.

While she’d rather be asleep, mom lifts her head once in awhile to keep an eye out while one of the cubs peers out from behind her.

I made the above photos with my Canon 6D and the 70-200 f/2.8 lens, which gives a great focal range for wildlife photography. But when the cubs came out from behind the protection of the adults I switched to the Canon 7D with the 400mm lens for a nice close-up.

A perfect pose that lasted only a moment!

  1. So beautiful! I take pictures of our lions and cubs at our local zoo (Portland OR) through glass. What an amazing opportunity to see these lions in the wild. Thank you for sharing.
