Great White Egret in Flight at Sunset

The Salton Sea in California is a fascinating place for it’s history and it’s unique shore, but the thing I like most about it is seeing all the birds.

It’s not Florida, but on the west coast it’s one of the best places I have found to photograph birds. In the morning they all seemed to be heading somewhere south and in the evening they all come back north again.

I just sat on the barnacled beach and photographed as they all flew past.

We had some amazing sunsets while we were there and I captured this Great White Egret on his way home at sunset.

This shot was a little tricky because the bird had to be either above or below the mountains in the background since they would become a silhouette at this time of day. I wanted to have enough light to retain some detail in the bird, plus, I needed a very high shutter speed which forced me to increase the ISO.

This image is 1/1600 second, f/5.0, ISO 2500.

    1. Hi Natalie, well even when you are at the right place at the right time it still takes skill to get the shot before the moment is gone, so don’t chalk it all up to luck! 🙂 Thanks for your visit and comments.
