Architectural Geometry in Daytona

Daytona beach has so much to offer. I can only imagine what it would be like in high season with tons of people partying all over the streets. From the coral sands at Ormond Beach, to helping to rescue sailors in trouble at sea, the exciting speedway, driving on the beach, and even architecture that commands attention with its geometric shapes and neon colours.

I made these images at Ocean Walk Shoppes right in the heart of it all in downtown Daytona Beach. I loved the contrasting colours and filling the frame with the shapes. With this much shape and colour, they needed very little post-processing.

In addition to the cool shopping mall, there was movie theatres, restaurants, hotels, an outdoor ice rink, sling shot amusement ride, an outdoor bandshell shaped like a castle, and of course the fabulous beach.

Florida has been great to us so far. Our next stop is in Titusville near the Kennedy Space Center and Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge.

  1. If you had fun photographing it, just think how much fun we had designing it! Out of all the photos I have seen of this facility your images seam to understand the forms and color compositions the best. Nice work.

    1. Hi Ward, wow, I am so surprised to hear from the architects! I am really glad you enjoyed the images, that means a lot to me that I did justice to your amazing building. Thank you so much for finding me and for the very kind compliment.

  2. I love Florida. When I was little, my folks took me to Miami for a vacation; it’s a place I will never forget. Great colors and lines in all the architecture! You’ve really done an awesome job of bringing this to life for us all to enjoy, Anne!

    1. That’s funny Toad because there is only one thing in all of Florida we didn’t like so far: Miami!! Ok we didn’t actually go to Miami but the outrageous drivers just on the outskirts of the city were enough. Seriously we have driven all over the continent pretty much and the Miami drivers are the worst by a LOOOOONG shot. I’m sure if you just fly in and take a taxi it’s probably an ok city. Although all the RVers we have met hate Miami too and say there is a lot of crime. Sorry Miami. Don’t mean to badmouth a place I haven’t been to, but you have a bad rep. Now Daytona, there’s a great city!! 🙂

    1. Thanks Richard, I have always loved contrasting colours like that. I thought it might not help me when I went to sell my house because my living room was violet (dark not mauve), bedroom green, bathroom orange, office salmon, hall yellow… I loved it. The whole place was landlord beige when I bought it. I wonder if the new people liked the colours or if they painted it beige again.
