Hilton Head and Tybee Barrier Islands

We visited many of the barrier islands in South Carolina and Georgia on our way south. The barrier islands all have beautiful sandy beaches on the eastern shore and salt water marshes on the western shore.

In South Carolina, the upscale Hilton Head Island is the best place for riding bikes. We rented a couple of bikes and rode along the hard packed beach and along some of the island’s 50 miles of bike paths. Hilton Head is one of those communities where even the fast food joints have swanky carved wooden signs and there are rules about what colour you can paint things. Over 70% of the island is gated communities. We found out from guy who rented the bikes to us that if you ride along the beach and then take a path up to the road, you can get behind the gates and see all the fancy houses.

Just south of Hilton Head is Tybee Island which is in Georgia. It has a much different atmosphere. While it also has some pretty upscale condos and a gorgeous beach, it also has restaurants and bars and surf shops and was much more festive. It was November so it was pretty quiet, but I can imagine the party atmosphere that must be there in the summer.

It was odd though that at Hilton Head there was free all-day parking in a huge lot right next to the beach and at Tybee we had to pay to park for an hour.

Here is an image I made of the pier at Tybee Island the night of the pastel skies. Click the image to view a larger version.

Tybee Island, Georgia

Next week I will have some images from another barrier island, probably my favourite, Jekyll Island in Georgia.

Please share!
