Cliffs at Western Brook Pond

During the boat trip through Western Brook Pond, there was a landing at the far end of the lake where a group of dejected looking hikers stood waiting to board the boat. Over the speakers, the boat driver emphasized that this was supposed to be a drop off point, not a pick up point, for hikers. It was funny for the passengers, but I’m not sure what the hikers thought! They had planned a 4 day hiking trip through the mountains, but got lost when the thick fog and storms set in and ended up returning to their drop off point to be rescued by the boat operator.

In these rugged mountains, a good map and compass skills would be essential. Two other hikers were air-lifted off the mountain when one of them fell and injured his knee and could not hike any further.

I can only imagine the scenery one must enjoy during the hike, but even from the lake the view of the cliffs is spectacular and there are a couple of beautiful waterfalls visible as well. The waterfall above is known as “Pissing Mare Falls”.
